ABOUT THE JBHS VMA
Since 2007, John Burroughs High School Vocal Music Association's POWERHOUSE, the advanced-mixed show choir under the direction of Brendan Jennings, has won seven National Championship titles.
They’ve delivered critically heralded performances on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "Dancing with the Stars," "The Voice," "America’s Got Talent," Hallmark Channel’s “Home & Family Holiday Special,” and at LA County Museum of Art’s 50th Anniversary Celebration (performing for luminaries like Barbra Streisand, Betty White, Ryan Seacrest, Seal, Dustin Hoffman, Jim Carrey, and Will Ferrell), the Hollywood Bowl (providing rich choral support to Steven Tyler and Aerosmith, as well as Glee’s Darren Criss), The Thirst Project’s Annual Thirst Gala, and Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee.
They’ve raised their voices with recording artists as diverse as Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Harry Connick, Jr., Foreigner, Nelly Furtado, The Canadian Tenors, and the cast of "GLEE" (a show Fox and producer Ryan Murphy have stated repeatedly was inspired by the JBHS vocal music program).
Powerhouse has traveled across the United States and internationally, recently performing in Hong Kong and Beijing, using the universal language of music to connect as show choir ambassadors around the world. They’ve also been featured multiple times on "Parade Magazine’s" annual list of "America’s Top 10 Favorite Show Choirs."
The other six award-winning choirs at Burroughs, including two entirely a cappella units, proudly present student talent every bit as phenomenal.
Each year, in their hometown venues, these Burbank choirs deliver astonishing, unparalleled performances before tens of thousands of audience members, including an annual Broadway-style revue, Burroughs on Broadway; a Holiday Concert that combines cherished winter standards, liturgical compositions (often in foreign languages), and centuries-spanning classical fare (frequently arranged in eight or more vocal parts); a Spring Concert that celebrates the season’s change with a variety of musical styles; and the exhilarating Pop Show, which has sold-out four dazzling performances annually for more than 35 years.
